Trauma and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD): Intervening with Youth with IDD who have Experienced Trauma
A Live Virtual Training
Trainer: Michael Gomez, Ph.D.
March 13, 2025 | 9:00am to 12:00pm (PT)
Youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
often face unique vulnerabilities that can make them more susceptible to
experiencing trauma. Communication challenges, social isolation, and dependence
on caregivers may complicate treatment and timely interventions. In addition, trauma may manifest differently
requiring specialized approaches to recognition, intervention, and support.
- Youth with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more
likely to experience abuse or neglect compared to their peers without
disabilities (Source: Sullivan & Knutson, 2000).
- Among children with autism spectrum disorder
(ASD), 18%-25% have experienced some form of physical abuse, and 20%-30% have
been exposed to emotional abuse or neglect (Source: Kern et al., 2015).
- Children with IDD are nearly 4 times more likely
to experience sexual abuse than children without disabilities. (Source:
National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1993).
