Interviewing (MI) & Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Integration
March 19, 26, & April 2, 2024 | 9:00AM – 12:00 PM PT
Clinical Practice Virtual Workshop
Join Kristin Dempsey, EdD, LMFT, LPCC full-time faculty
member at the Wright Institute and practicing psychotherapist in the Bay Area
specializing in complex trauma, MI, addiction counseling, suicide prevention,
and much more. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Dempsey trained community
mental health providers in various evidenced-based and promising practices and
provides ongoing coaching and consultation in behavioral health system redesign
and implementation of evidence-based practices. Dr Dempsey is the author of
upcoming book, The Harm Reduction Workbook for Addiction an evidence-based This evidence-based workbook reevaluates
our relationship with addictive substances, and offers a powerful alternative
to “abstinence-only” approaches.
MI
and DBT both evidence-based practices are with well-researched and have impressive
outcomes for treating complex developmental and behavioral disorders: substance
use disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, and trauma-related
issues, to name a few. Given the commonality between the two approaches as well
as their distinctive strengths, MI and DBT have the potential to increase
positive clinical outcomes when we can harness the power of both approaches. In
the workshop, we will explore when to apply each approach and we will look at
times when it might be helpful to add some dialectical thinking to the
motivational engagement, and some strategically applied skills to standard DBT
interventions. Join us to help build your skills in both approaches and
consider how you can flexibly and effectively combine both approaches in your
daily clinical work.
The
participants will learn to:
- Distinguish which approach -- motivational
interviewing or DBT -- to use at each stage of change for each client concern
when treating clients with complex developmental and behavioral disorders.
- Identify the dialectical components of
motivational interviewing and determine when and how to use “double-sided”
responses to further build dialectical awareness and momentum among clients in
early stages of change.
- Apply the four motivational microskills when
facilitating a DBT skills individual and group training session for clients
enrolled in DBT treatment.
- . Determine when to offer DBT skills when engaging
clients in conversations about change early in treatment.
This training will be held via Zoom. A meeting link will be emailed to you one week before the training
