Event Description:

Co-Occurring Disorders: An Overview of Prevalence, Assessment, Client Engagement, and Treatment Interventions

An Interactive Virtual Workshop that Creates Space for Practice and Development of Practical Skills

Trainer: Darla Belflower, LCSW

 February 13 & 15, 2024
10:00am to 1:00pm PT

The lifetime prevalence rate for the development of a substance use disorder (SUD) among individuals diagnosed with a mental illness varies across studies, with many variables at play, such as the way SUD and mental illness are defined.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) latest statistics state there are approximately 9.2 million adults in the US that have a co-occurring disorder. For individuals who have co-occurring disorders there is an increase in severity of the symptoms, a lower rate of treatment adherence, higher rates of dropping out of treatment, increased risk of suicide, and greater risk of relapse. This workshop will provide education regarding the prevalence of co-occurring disorders, assessment tools for this population, strategies for engagement, and treatment interventions for people who have a diagnosis of co-occurring disorders.

Why should you attend?

  1. Direct care staff are often well versed in treating behavioral health disorders at the exclusion of SUDs or treat SUDs in isolation of other significant behavioral health concerns such as major depression, trauma, and anxiety. This workshop brings home the wholistic approach of treating the whole person as they present.
  2. Fragmented treatment of only one disorder often leads to poor outcomes and high dropout rates
  3. Those seeking treatment have a much better chance of healing and recovery with an integrated treatment approach that leads to meaningful goals that are important to the individual seeking help.

Do not miss this opportunity to learn about co-occurring disorders that will walk you through assessment, engagement, and treatment with the client in the center of directing their own treatment
