Event Description:

The Dignity of Risk and the Duty to Care

December 15, 2021

10:00-11:00 am (PST)

Choice and self-determination are foundational principles of recovery-oriented practice. But if a person is making a choice that steers their life away from recovery, how should staff respond?

Most providers hold values such as person-centered care, holistic and collaborative practice approaches, and a belief in self-determination. These values are more difficult to hold when people engage in choices that are self-defeating. Providers can become overly protective, directive, or even neglectful depending on the situation. This training introduces a pragmatic,recovery-oriented framework for working with people who are making choices that may be self-defeating.

Patricia E. Deegan Ph.D. is an internationally renowned speaker and founder of Pat Deegan & Associates. For over 30 years, Pat has been a thought leader and disruptive innovator in the field of behavioral health recovery. Pat is an activist in the disability rights movement and has lived her own journey of recovery after being diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. She has held several academic appointments, has numerous publications, and has carried a message of hope for recovery to audiences around the world.
