In this two-day introduction to Motivational Interviewing, participants will be provided an overview of the major components of MI, with emphasis on using the method with challenging clinical presentations in busy office practices.
The workshop will follow a logical progression starting with understanding the definition of the approach, the "spirit" which allows for client engagement and growth, the structure that promotes "change talk" and the specific techniques used with clients. Attention will be given to how these components work together to provide for efficient and strategic interventions.Discussion will also include adaptations of the model for primary care practice using Brief Action Planning. The workshop will conclude with instruction addressing next steps in embedding the model in practice after the workshop.
During this in-person training, participants will discuss the philosophy and skills of motivational interviewing in the context of community behavioral healthcare clinics.
Upon completion of the training, attendees:
· Are able to define the concept of "Spirit of MI" and how to use the spirit to create a culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach to care.
· Are able to identify the four processes of MI and how each can be used to diminish resistance, focus care and assist in creating client-driven treatment planning.
· Are able to practice the five fundamental micro-skills of MI and the ways to use skills to promote behavioral change, including individuals with thought and personality disorders.
· Are able to apply the basics steps of Brief Action Planning (adapted MI) for brief visits.
· Are able to review steps for implementation of MI in public behavioral health settings.
· Are able to recognize how "change talk" appears for many behavioral health care clients and practice ways to expand and deepen"change talk" that predicts change behavior.
