Final PLI Skills Training Workshop

Practicing Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment AND Peer Leadership Institute Graduation!

Thursday, May 12, 2016

10 AM to 3 PM

For Napa and Sonoma Participants

Training Description

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs(http://www.integration.samhsa.gov/clinical-practice/SBIRT).   SBIRT is an evidence based practice that allows for providers to invite discussion about substance use, and help facilitate further exploration of use, or consideration of treatment. In this workshop, PLI participants will be able to practice the skills learned in the SBIRT webinar 5/5/16.   Viewing the webinar prior to the workshop is highly recommended, but not required.

Participants will be able to do the following:

  • Practice asking substance use screening questions while attending to the needs and concerns of the consumer/client.
  • Apply Motivational Interviewing skills to conversations regarding substance use, and to make referrals to ongoing treatment.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide a "warm hand-off" to another treatment program or provider.
  • State the roles of peer providers in the SBIRT process and how SBIRT fits into the peer provider's individual scope of practice.
